I have a long list I made a while ago of things I need to do to divorce myself from Google. It’s super daunting and I’ve been procrastinating. Last night Google requested a video of my face when logging in. It didn’t require it but it’s only a matter of time before that or something else awful gets added as a condition of using their service. I’m now ready to start my email transition elsewhere. It’s probably one of the bigger steps so it may give me momentum to do the other steps also.

I have seen a million guides and gmail replacement options, but I’m curious what the latest opinions on email services are. I currently lean toward proton and I’m willing to pay, but again, there are so many options and pro/cons to different companies and services it is overwhelming. Any info I can get will be helpful in choosing an email service. Thanks everyone.

Update: I’ve taken the very first step and started forwarding my Gmail to a proton email account. One thing I just thought of is that my android phone currently uses contacts synced from my Google account automatically. Does anyone know a way to replicate that with proton?

This is a story about a girl and how she has gotten around with many different email providers, and would have probably received many different viruses had she not been using protection! She is also aware that she has received a great number of trackers over the years, but she is fighting against those things to. So as the meme says “Just, do it!” Set up an auto-reply, or an away from office reply for a certian time that you want to give yourself to stop letting people know you have changed your address, saying you no longer use the email and forward your gmail to a throw away address with whoever you decide to use. My suggestion is getting your own email host with your own domain, so things do not block your email because they know it is just an adress they cannot sell. May I suggest easydns.com or someother personal host with a wildcard option.

I transitioned away from gmail a while ago, if I remember correctly I had an autoreply saying I am moving away from gmail so I will have to updated you on my email address. That is the only time I think I used the actual gmail page other than for signing up for accounts. I always used the mail app on my iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Than as things got moved over to their new hide my email address or my ISP’s email I was able to stop using gmail. When it was time to start deappleing most of the important stuff was going to my ISP address already, but I had also started using Proton. Something was going around about a Proton C suite person being a pro-Trump person so I had to switch my email provider to domain host who was hosthero at the time, there are other reasons why I would not use Proton but that I do not remember the whole story as to why.

I did not realize how much hosthero was fucking me over with the price for webhosting and email until I found easydns.com. Easydns offers a wildcard function so I can create random addresses on the fly when signing up for something.

Anywho I was still using hosthero when I decided to stop using my ISP’s email service because it is hosted on an exchange server. So I had everything autoreplied saying I was no longer using that email address because of the failings of my ISP and that the email was being forwarded to another address, as things got moved over to their own address and I was able to just stop using it. When I was using hosthero everything had its own address but forwarded to a private address if it needed a reply I would reply from it’s address and because I did not know any better and hosthero’s instructions said I had to add each account separately to my mail app I had a boat load of email addresses in my mail app. I transferred my domain over to easydns and because they offered wildcard email they also had instructions for me to setup multiple from accounts in my mail app.

My university email I just stopped using after I graduated so no real transition from it, every so often I say I should really check it but it has been well over a decade now if that prof or classmate ever got back to me about whatever I am none the wiser.

I briefly even had a Proton account, do not remember why I gave that up but it was probably when I moved my domain from a .com to a .ca TLD and had a host that offered email addresses. I very briefly had a yahoo account for a joke/spam email account before finding out I could use the myusername+whatever@gmail.com formula.

I had a hotmail account during the early 2000’s, I do not know if hotmail still exists or not any who POP3 needs to die a miserable death! Writing this I am realizing I have averaged more than 1 email provider/host per decade this century and I can say that until the 2090’s at that point I would be able to say I averaged 1 provider per decade of the 21st century. I even tried and failed miserably to host my own email address so if you count that I have gotten around! I was but a young child in the 1990’s my ISP was not hosting their own email service they had it hosted out to someone else but when they offered DSL I got one of those email addresses but I am not going to count that because it was in the 1900’s and it was shared between my siblings.

Just finishing up this comment I remembered I have had 2 maybe 3 different work email addresses this century! So I can say I have averaged more then 1 email provider a decade this century for the decades that have not even started yet, hell this girl has gotten around.

That is just the servers, I have had multiple addresses on each service minus yahoo, hotmail, the work providers, and the 90’s ISP service. So don’t sweet changing I have found my last personal domain I hope, there maybe changes in the work situation in the future but who knows.

As I said protection is always a good thing to use when using email, having wildcard addresses is a good way to do that, if something gets spammy just close the address or have it automatically delete before coming to your main address. You can also get extended free trials to things which I may have done once or twice! Than use pihole or adguard home, I have a finally tuned pihole on my network and my wireguard VPN, to block trackers.
