With that logic, any web browser is a piracy tool. Because it lets you download and upload illegal files on illegal websites.

Name of this project is a bit misleading. I thought this is a fork of the old youtube-dl, which wasn’t updated in 5 years. But youtube-dl-server instead uses a fork of the old version named yt-dlp, which is the main program to use nowadays. So this project in this post should have been named yt-dlp-server instead.
Yes, if the Autocomplete uses Ai features then it is Ai assisted. But what about searching for bugs? Nothing is Ai created in this case, but it is Ai assisted. Even if you did not incorporate any generated code from the Ai model.
And what about projects who do not disclose it? We have to deceiver and guess if its just Ai assisted or has some parts that are Vibe coded. This is what I mean it gets time consuming, and adds friction. How do we even know if this was not just copy pasted from the web (which seems to be okay for smaller stuff), and how do the person know if the copy pasted code was created by an Ai assist? They might not even know if they are honest.
Why any efforts to blame? No need to blame Ai. Just use an Ai that blames other failing Ai. Modern problems require modern solution.
The problem is, at what point becomes it just Ai assisted. And who decides and how to proof this. These uncertainties are part of the problem for rules like these. Not only is it difficult to decide and time consuming, it also creates friction in the community. Note, I am not against having this rule. It’s just, it is such a depressing situation.

I assume you can use it on any platform that runs a browser, without installing software on the system. I use (other type of) software that runs in the browser, but locally. This type of browser software is handy.

BTW System76, the company behind their Linux laptops and the Linux desktop COSMIC, was fighting hard against the law to make exemptions for Open Source software. That’s important for them, because System76 operates in California. So I think they are big part to thank for here: Colorado and California Exempt Open Source from Age Attestation (May 2026)

I predicted this for long time! Just like Microsoft purchased Github, I was expecting one of the big Ai companies (including Nvidia) to buy Hugging Face. Because that’s what big tech companies do, if they are allowed to.
Ease of use isn’t illegal. My point was that yt-dlp or any other tool isn’t just a piracy tool, because it is possible to do piracy stuff. It’s similar why emulators aren’t piracy tools. yt-dlp does nothing that is against the law, therefore calling it piracy tool is a bit of stretch. Any generalized tool that lets you download files from the internet and are easy would be a piracy tool with such definition. But the tool isn’t specifically crafted, nor marketed as a piracy tool (which is important in such a discussion).
