  • For me the big problem is the camera. Ideally I should probably carry a proper camera with me at all times, but that’s just not realistic. I really value the pictures I take throughout my life so I need a phone that captures things well.

It seems for now Ubuntu Touch does a decent job with Android camera drivers, but Nura has a long way to go on all devices. I trust it’ll get there though.

  • I have been using Gnome since forever, so I don’t have much point of reference outside. Long story short GTK4 apps just have a really good look and feel in my opinion. GTK3 was a bit rough around the edges as they were still figuring it out, and I think some people got weirded out by that. GTK4 feels much more finished to me.

For phones I guess the key thing is that GTK4 apps are pretty much all adaptive. This means that most apps would work on phones, but I find it pretty useful on desktop as well. This affects not only for the ability to resize windows but also logics by which you navigate content, for example swiping sideways on phones or with two fingers on trackpads takes you back inside apps.

I think it’s really impressive how they have managed to create a design philosophy that runs throughout apps developed by completely different people. For me it just feels really user friendly. I guess the same consistency is why I would enjoy having the same apps on my phone as on my laptop.

I’d say Tuba (for Mastodon) and Flare (Signal) are two pretty good examples of apps I’m using on desktop that I would love to use on my phone. I also have started taking a liking to GNOME Web.
